(1). The Crown Lease to contain the following provisoe8:"

(1). The land to be occupied only by buildings erected for the Chinese Young Men's Christian Association; such buildings only to be used for purposes in accord-

2.

-ance with the Constitution of the Chinese Young Men's Christian Association. (2). No technical education work of such a

nature as is, in the opinion of the Governor-in-Council, prejudicial to the interests of the Hongkong University to be carried on in such buildings. (3). His Majesty his heirs successors and

assigns shall have full power to resume, enter into and retake possession of all or any part of the land if required for the improvement of the Colony or for any other public purpose whatsoever on three months' notice being given of its being so required, compensation being fixed at the rate of 24 dollars per square foot for the land, the buildings being taken at a valuation to be fairly and impartially

made by the Surveyor of his said Majesty his heirs successors or assigns.

In explanation of these recommendations I have

-

to state that more than 2 years ago the International Committee of

the Young Men's Christian Association, which is an American

Organisation and under whose auspices both the Chinese and the

European Young Men's Christian Associations two distinct

institutions - were established here some years ago, offered a sum

of $75,000 gold to be spent on the erection and equipment of a

building for the Chinese Young Men's Christian Association in

Hongkong, at present located in rented premises, on condition that a sum of $25,000 gold was raised locally for the acquisition
